This year, Passover begins before sundown on April

This year, Passover begins before sundown on April 12th and ends after nightfall on April 20th. Also called Pesach, Passover Seder is the most widely observed Jewish ritual in the USA and celebrates the Exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Passover is an abundant meal which is held on both of the first two nights of the holiday in Jewish homes. Seder means “order” in Hebrew and the meal follows a s specific progression, which is the same in all Jewish communities. The foods laid out have special meaning and remind the participants of aspects of slavery and redemption. Jews read from the Haggadah, a book that describes the freeing of the slaves, the order of the Seder and the meaning of the rituals. Since much of the Passover observance takes place at home and not in the Synagogue, the dinner table takes on a special significance. The table is set for a royal feast and ritual foods are arranged throughout. The main parts are the wine or grape juice, the Matzos and the Seder Plate. It is customary to eat matzo and consume 4 cups of red wine or grape juice during the evening. Other customs include: thorough cleaning of the home in the days prior to Passover; purchasing Kosher for Passover foods, as well as fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins and spices; utilizing designated Passover utensils and table coverings or buying new ones; ridding the house of leavened foods that are not “Kosher for Passover” (also called chametz); a symbolic search for any chametz still in the house (this is done the night before the holiday begins) and a ritual burning of the chametz is done the morning before Passover begins.
