Apple Bunny Skewers – Kid-Friendly Appetizer

Apple bunnies are a fun Japanese method of cutting apple wedges into a bunny shape with flapping ears. They’re soaked in lemon water to prevent them from browning and give them a little zing! We’ve paired them with cheddar cheese wedges on skewers, making them an easy and kid-friendly appetizer.

On the Ingredients

  • Apples originally came from Central Asia, but they have been cultivated in Asia and Europe for centuries before being brought to America by European colonists. Apples grown from seeds are very different from their parent trees, so to maintain desirable varieties, apple trees are grafted, meaning each apple tree is a clone of the tree that initially produced that variety of apples. The term “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” may be wishful thinking, but apples are very nutrient-dense, containing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. (Read more about apples.)

Recipe Notes and Substitutions

We used cheddar, but you could use any cheese that pairs well with apples, like brie or double gloucester.

Apple bunnies are a fun Japanese method of cutting apple wedges into a bunny shape with flapping ears. They're soaked in lemon water to prevent them from browning and give them a little zing! We've paired them with cheddar cheese wedges on skewers, making them an easy and kid-friendly appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 2 crisp apples

  • 12 cubes of cheddar cheese

  • 1/2 a lemon

  • Other needs
  • 12 appetizer skewers

Directions

  • Set up a bowl with two cups of cold water and the juice from half a lemon.
  • Slice the apples into sixths. Use a sharp knife to trim the core from each slice. Place the apple slices in the lemon water.
  • Work on one apple wedge at a time. Score a shallow V-shape incision in the apple skin, just enough depth to allow skin removal.
  • Run the knife just under the apple peel (as if you peel apple skin typically), stopping at the base of the V-shape. Remove the center triangle between the two ears. Return to the water and repeat with the remaining wedges.
  • Pierce a cheese cube onto each skewer, then pierce an apple bunny above it. Arrange on a platter and serve!
