Apple Dumplings

You’re sure to impress your guests with these apple dumplings. These baked apples wrapped in flaky pastry are delicious on their own or with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

On the Ingredients:

  • Apples originally came from Central Asia, but they have been cultivated in Asia and Europe for centuries before being brought to America by European colonists. Apples grown from seeds are very different from their parent trees, so to maintain desirable varieties, apple trees are grafted, meaning each apple tree is a clone of the tree that initially produced that variety of apples. The term “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” may be wishful thinking, but apples are very nutrient-dense, containing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. (Read more about apples.)

Recipe Notes and Substitutions:

You could also make this with pears or peaches.

Ingredients

  • 1 Simple Pie Dough Recipe

  • 3 large honeycrisp apples

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp water

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Peel the apples and remove the core. Combine the cinnamon and sugar in a bowl and roll the apples in it, coating the outside. Sprinkle some inside the core too.
  • Roll out the pie dough into a roughly 14x14” square. Cut it into quarters. Place an apple so it’s sitting in the center of one of the squares.
  • Bring the corners of the dough up over the apple and use your fingers to pinch the edges together to seal the dough around the apple. Place in the greased baking dish. Repeat for all of the remaining apples and dough pieces.
  • Use the third square of dough to make three leaf shapes. Stick them to the tops of the dumplings (moisten with water to help stick if needed).
  • Beat together the egg and water. Brush each dumpling with the egg wash and sprinkle with some of the remaining cinnamon and sugar.
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes, until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples soft. Serve warm as is or with whipped cream or ice cream.
