World Bee Day at the Co-op

Bees are to thank for an impressive variety of products in our store!

In our general merchandise department, you can find locally made beeswax wraps, locally crafted Goat’s milk & honey soap, honey dippers, a delightful assortment of 100% beeswax candles from Sunbeam Candles and Big Dipper Wax Works (in specialty shapes, pillars, tapers, votives and tealights) as well as beeswax blocks!

Our grocery department abounds with scrumptious local honey and honey-sweetened goodies! Whether it’s Green Bee soda, Honey Mama’s Fudge, chunks of luxurious Mediterranean honey comb, Honey lavender ice cream, or raw wildflower and specialty honey from Swans (Albion, ME) and Nubik Ranch (Sangerville, ME), our selection of honey products can’t bee beat!

Bees help us out in so many ways— they support our health and wellbeing, too! In our Health and Beauty Department, we carry many products brought to you by bees: Beekeepers Throat Soothing Pops, Immune Propolis Throat Spray, Propolis Nasal Spray Mix, Propolis Soothing Cough Drops; Honey Gardens Elderberry and Honey Immune Tonic; Boiron Honey Cough Syrup for Adults and Kids; Town Farm Organics Fire Ciders; Mickelberry Throat and Lung Tonic and Ginger Tonic; Portland Bee Lip Balm and Soaps; Herb Pharm Propolis Extract and YS Organics Bee Pollen.

There would be no mead without bees! Often called “honey wine,” mead is considered one of the oldest alcoholic drinks and is made by fermenting honey with water and yeast. Some exceptional local brands we would like to recommend are Aegir’s Den Meadery (Palermo, ME) and The Fat Friar’s Meadery (Newcastle, ME). John will be pouring Acerglyn’s Maple Syrup mead at the 5/20 tasting so bee sure to bee there!

Nothing beats honey and chevre! Be sure to try swing by our Cheese department this Bee Day to try Blue Ledge Farm’s Honey Chèvre with Orange, made with Vermont-made honey from Champlain Valley apiaries! PS It goes great on local Maine Crisp crackers (which are also lightly sweetened with honey)!

This week is the first time this year that we have more than 100 local produce items available!
