Muhammara is a delicious sweet, savory, and slightly spicy dip from Syria. Similar to hummus, this is a wonderful vegan starter, especially paired with flatbread or veggies.
On the Ingredients
- Walnuts are a popular nut from a tree that likely originated in Central Asia, though there are now 20 species growing wild across the world. It’s appropriate that walnuts look like little brains, as they are pretty good for the brain due to their high antioxidant content and other nutrients. They have a lot of other benefits too. Walnuts have a mild flavor and buttery texture, making them a great base for dips. (Read more about walnuts).
- Pomegranate molasses, also called Dibs Ar-rumman, is a sweet condiment seasoning made from concentrated pomegranate juice. It’s used in Middle Eastern cuisine, usually for fish or meat dishes or as a salad dressing. It’s generally concentrated to half the juice’s starting volume and lightly seasoned with spices.
Recipe Notes and Substitutions
Check the ingredients of the roasted red peppers you’re using. If they have salt, be very careful adding more salt to the recipe.
