Goat Cheese Board with Figs and Apricot Jam

There’s been a recent internet trend that’s shaking the appetizer world, butter boards! A basic concept, it simply involves spreading butter over a cutting board and decorating it with flavorful toppings. Then your guests scrape the butter onto bread slices. That trend inspired this recipe. But instead of butter, we used a mixture of goat cheese and cream cheese for a far more flavorful spread. Paired with apricot jam, fresh fig slices, and edible flowers, it’s a feast for the eyes and sure to please!

On the Ingredients

  • Soft goat cheese has a distinct creamy but crumbly texture and tangy flavor. Not only is it delicious, but goat cheese is also rich in nutrients. It also contains less lactose than cow milk cheese, making it more digestible for some who have lactose intolerance. Goat milk also mainly contains A2-type casein rather than A1. A1 can cause bloating and digestive discomfort like lactose does. (Read more about goat milk cheese).
  • Figs are a Mediterranean fruit that can be enjoyed fresh, cooked, or fried. They are said to have a flavor like a cross between a strawberry, a currant, and a date. Figs pair well with many savory flavors, especially strong cheeses. They contain small amounts of a large variety of nutrients but are rich in copper and vitamin B6. (Read more about figs.)

That trend inspired this recipe. But instead of butter, we used a mixture of goat cheese and cream cheese for a far more flavorful spread. Ingredients

  • 8oz plain goat cheese (room temp)

  • 8oz cream cheese (room temp)

  • 1/2 cup apricot jam

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 3 ripe figs

  • 5 edible flowers

  • mild microgreens

  • toasted sesame seeds

  • sourdough bread to serve

Directions

  • Using a hand mixer, combine the goat cheese and cream cheese. Select your serving board and, using a spreader or small spatula, apply the cheese mixture to the board, using a scale pattern, or simply spread evenly. If the board size allows, leave a space for your bread.
  • Mix together the apricot jam and water so it’s a consistency that can be drizzled. Drizzle the apricot jam across the cheese. Slice the figs thinly and arrange them on top. Add the edible flowers and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and microgreens. Serve with sourdough bread slices.
