Mission & History

Co-operative Principles

Description of Business

Our consumer food cooperative began as a buying club in the Winter of 1974 out of the desire of a handful of people to bring more fresh produce, cheeses and whole foods to the Blue Hill Peninsula. The buying club expanded their offerings to include bulk grains and, within the first year, membership reached 100. In 1979, the Blue Hill Co-op was incorporated and, after many iterations, moved in 1993 to its current location in downtown Blue Hill. After repeated expansions, utilizing the full capacity of its present location, the Blue Hill Co-op is a tightly packed 1,850 sq. ft. retail space with more than 1,700 member-owners.

In 2014, after several years of planning and discussion, the Co-op purchased an undeveloped 5.5-acre site on South Street in Blue Hill with a goal of building a new and expanded Co-op store. A fundraising capital campaign was launched in August of 2016 and, within a year, Blue Hill Co-op raised $745,250 in Preferred Share investments and donations. In an effort to foster the growth of a vibrant local economy, promote healthy eating choices, and continue our efforts toward a more sustainable food system, the new Co-op building promises ample space for customers to comfortably shop among an expanded selection of local and organic products.

Our Operation

The Blue Hill Co-op is a cooperatively-owned grocery store that specializes in selling local & organic foods. Blue Hill Co-op employs 30 full & part-time staff members, many of whom have been with the Co-op over 10 years. We have a Café that makes daily soups, sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and lunch specials. All our prepared foods are made in house using the same organic and local products we promote and sell. Many people with restricted diets depend upon us for a variety of food choices. We are also the best source on the peninsula for organic, natural vitamins and wellness items.

The Blue Hill Co-op prides itself in supporting local & organic food systems. In 2016, we purchased over $766,000 from Maine producers, resulting in over $1 million in sales of Maine product.

The Co-op is open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Everyone is welcome to shop at the Co-op and, over the years, we have become a community food hub for the entire Blue Hill Peninsula where people gather daily. Our customers include locals, summer/seasonal residents and tourists.

Member Participation

Co-op member-owners are required to pay $200 in equity; either paid in full or $20 annually for 10 years. Co-op member-owner benefits include: 10% off during monthly Full-Moon sales, special pricing on case quantities & pre-orders, and other in store Co-op deals. Membership also includes a vote in Co-op elections, patronage dividends, and the satisfaction of being a part of a community-owned effort. In 2016, sales at the Blue Hill Co-op were just shy of $3 million, over 76% of which were sales to Co-op members.

Many of our member-owners are active participants in our daily operations by serving on the Board of Directors, serving on committees, and by volunteering in the store as a working-member a few hours per month.
